South Sudanese Portrait Series

While undergoing an assignment photographing the millionth South Sudanese refugee that has passed into northern Uganda for UNHCR, I realized during the harrowing interviews the the immense and perilous distances that the men, women and children had to make to find safety. As they arrived, refugees had to sit on a bench with their family and have their fingerprints recorded. Seeing this I decided to pay homage to their unfathomable strength by setting up an on-the-fly portrait session (fortunately, I carried a ready-made background) in order to document the many faces that passed through the registration right at that moment.  Many had barely been out of the dangers of their homeland for a few hours and were exhausted from great journeys of many days. The majority had to travel at night to avoid detection and stay alive. Against this backdrop I photographed a minute in the history this border that sees many hundreds crossing every day.
